One week of park-it lists

It has been a week of park-it lists, so let me show you what a week actually looks like — not a perfect week, just a real pattern, night by night.

Monday's list was long: the email, the bill, the conversation being rehearsed at midnight. Tuesday's was shorter. By Thursday, the same worry appeared for the third night in a row — and that is useful, because a worry that returns three times is not a sleep problem. It is a daytime problem asking for a daytime hour, which is exactly where we put it.

Here is what the list does, and it is not magic. Your mind holds on to things it is afraid you will forget. Write the thing down, in plain words, and the mind can let go of what paper is now holding. The worry does not disappear. It waits, outside the bedroom, until morning — when you are actually able to do something about it.

The wind-down around the list stayed the same each night: lights lower at nine, phone charging in another room, one slow thing, nothing that glows. Some nights it worked quickly. One night it did not, and we do not panic about one night. We look at the week.

In the mornings you rated your energy, one to ten, no judgement. The pattern over seven days says more than any single night ever could: the early nights gave back more than the late ones took, and you could see it in your own numbers.

Tonight, we start again at nine. Bring me tomorrow's worries. All of them. Then we park them. Screens down. Tomorrow-you says thanks.
